Ask two deli counters for a number two slice and you may receive different results. Their machines, settings and local shorthand can differ. At home, the useful reference is the finished food: does it fold, separate, stay intact and give the bite you want? A chart can help you start, but it cannot replace a small sample from the actual product.

Do not read the food examples as universal compatibility approval. Your machine manual and the particular food condition control what can be sliced. A cured ham, a soft roast and raw bacon may all appear in deli discussions while requiring different handling and cleaning.

Translate inches without pretending the food is precise

One inch equals 25.4 millimeters. A sixteenth of an inch is therefore approximately 1.59 mm, an eighth is approximately 3.18 mm and a quarter is 6.35 mm. Those conversions help interpret a recipe or a listing; they do not mean a flexible slice retains that dimension perfectly after cutting.

For example, a recipe requesting an eighth-inch slice is closer to three millimeters than to one. Check the output away from the slicer

Make a small sample using the documented operating procedure, then inspect it on a separate surface. For a very soft slice, squeezing it between measuring jaws can change the thickness you are trying to measure. Look at three things: the central thickness, whether the edges taper, and whether several consecutive pieces resemble each other.
